Solange Knowles is my shero. She was born to stand out, and she revels in it. She is bold and beautiful. Sugar, spice, and everything nice. The epitome of cool. Solange makes her own rules and the rest of the world watches as she floats about with such poise and ease.

America’s Sweetheart: Lupita Nyong’o

I absolutely love this video of Lupita, it shows just how down-to-earth she is. Braiding is a ritual that is so special in black history, and its important that we keep the tradition going. I know it’s been said over and over but I’ll just add my two cents since I haven’t yet about our Ms. Nyong’o: She is one of the most regal and humble celebrities I’ve seen in a long while. Her humility and calm demeanor just put you at ease, and that’s one of the reasons why she is so fascinating. But it’s kind of sad that it is, because celebrities should retain their humanness once they achieve success in Hollywood or whatever industry they go into.

What’s even more important about Lupita is her color. She is the deepest shade of chocolate and one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. In a society where ‘white is right’ and ‘long-haired thick red bones’ are “in”, we seem to forget who’s watching us. Young people. Darker skin tones get no love, especially in the black community and its so unfortunate. Our sons and daughters need to know that black, in every shade, is beautiful. Now little brown girls have a respectable role model (*cough cough* Riri) they can look up to, one that can teach them to love themselves. They finally have a CoverGirl that looks like them and that is going to do wonders for their self-esteem. Ok I’m going to stop gushing about her now lol.
